Where to Put a Spinning-Wing Decoy — and When to Leave It in the Truck

A spinner is the loudest thing in your spread. That’s the whole argument for it and the whole argument against it.

What it’s actually doing

The flash of a spinning wing reads from a long way off as a duck landing. It’s a distance attractor — it buys you attention from birds that never would have looked. Inside a couple hundred yards, that job is done, and the spinner starts competing with the illusion instead of selling it.

Where it goes

At the upwind edge of the pocket, or just off to the side of it. Visible from a distance, and out of the spot where you actually want birds to put their feet down.

Two mistakes to avoid:

• Directly in the pocket. Birds finishing into the hole now have a spinning machine in their landing zone. They’ll slide off it.
• Behind the hide. The flash pulls eyes toward you instead of away.

Height helps early, hurts late. Standing it up gets visibility across cover — but a silhouette on a pole is also the easiest thing on the water for a pressured bird to identify.

When to leave it in the truck

Early season, on fresh birds, a spinner is close to cheating. By late season, on the same water, it can be the reason you don’t kill anything.

Birds that have survived a month of hunting have been shot at over spinners. The flash stops meaning “food” and starts meaning “gun.” When you see birds working well and then flaring at a hundred and fifty yards, kill the motor and watch what happens on the next pass. That’s the test, and it takes one flight to run.

If you hunt where spinners are common, run yours less than everybody else. Being the only quiet spread on a pressured lake is an advantage.

Check your state

Spinning-wing rules vary — some states restrict them entirely, some restrict them during certain seasons, and some public areas have their own rules regardless of state law. This is one to verify before opening day rather than after.

The rule of thumb

Use it to get seen. Turn it off to get finished. A remote kill switch is the cheapest upgrade a spinner owner can make.
